Movie animation.

project overview

2019

Water voor de zondenaar (water for the sinner) is a short animation rich of symbolism and metaphors highlighting the relationship between water and the Christian religion.
In 2019 I was graduating from high school at the GGCA and assigned to make a visual artwork combining the element water with the middle-ages. My brain literally overflooded with visuals and ideas, so I decided use the only medium I could think of that allowed me to combine all them all in one story; MOVIE ANIMATION.
The biggest challenge was to learning how to animate by myself because it was not part of the school program. I was Lucky and blessed with all the time I could wish for to focus on the project due to a broken knee. Finally I had all the time and reason to pursuit my childhood dream of making an animation!
I winged it and graduated with the top score 10/10!
One year later the movie was exhibited at the Waldorf 100 Festifal
Special thanks to Berni van Gils and Roos van Genderen.
Naar Jou
2020

During my gap year in 2020 I got the chanse to animate a 2 minute music video for the NPO mini series Opslaan als (Safe as) 2021.
Opslaan Als is an original series by artist and comedian Eva Crutzen. Every episode features an original song. 'Naar Jou' is the 'slot chord' of the comedy the series. An intimate and fragile song about the ever fading memories of her mother who passed away when Eva was 12 years old.
production
step 1 mood board and concept art

step 2 thumbnail storyboard

small sketches that help to get an overview of the shots,
possibilities and overall storyline.
step 3 storyboard and 'client check-in' for green light production

The thumbnail is translated to a more defined storyboard considering the composition of each individual shot.
This is a great moment for brainstorming with the client.

Color script and texture
Color is next to sound the most emotional impact full component of a visual art work.
The colors script for the series was 'salmon pink and pistachio green'
As you see below, the impact of color
is also very much influenced by its texture.
For this movie I suggested to use scanned in analogue pastel textures to give the animation a sense of warmth.

Blank digital color Aquarelle (analogue + digital) pastel color (analogue)

After the visual style is agreed upon the colors are applied in compositional tryouts.

WEVED
2021

The WE ARE WEVED animation has an extraordinary story to it.
It was when I was invited by my new friend Stefan Koper in 2021 to join him and our shared friend Jannar Brummans to a fieldtrip and brainstorming session for the goals, values, vision and brand idenity eastablishment for the Biodynamic weaving company collaborating with Claudy Jongstra.
We went to see a big Farm to potentially start some sort of local community empowering people, plants and animals of 'forgotten value'.
Stefan had hired team from the Rotterdam based agency (name not mentioned due to reputational reasons) Struggled to synchronize, pick up, let alone formulate express or represent the foundationally basic, yet complex values, vision and mission of WEVED.
This had to do with a lacking personal roots in comprehensive organic philosophy systems like bio-dynamic farming.
After the weekend trip, A script came to me during a nap inspiring an short animation.
It was exactly what the founders of WEVED where looking for but did not know before they saw it;
An visually represented narrative using metaphors to contextualize their vision and align to their own purpose.
What I did was observe, obsorbe and re-precent from a 3rd person perspective the stories, narratives, and questions discussed druing the weekend.
With my strong visual orientation and ability to formulate original metaphors such movie animations come naturally to me.

HOW IT'S MADE?
THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
a story starts with a vision, that vision is translated in a script. This is the original script shared with the WEVED team.

ANIMATING
Usually animations take a lot of preproduction to make sure everything is right and nothing is made without neseccity.
In this case, the raw inspiration was flowing organically because of the heart felt passion and connection to the subject matter.

Color
The color blue is inspierd by the ambition of WEVED to farm the rare (...) plant used locally by artists like rembrand to create the famouse indigo blue color with natural colloring.
The original writing weved in the anination was used as the logo reprecenting WEVED for the first few years of its groth.
Final movie

WEVED part 2
From WOOL to WEVED
Below you see the second collaboration with WEVED in 2021. This time a short animated movie describing the product chain journey.
Starting with soil, the land, and the Bio-dynamic* sheep. The wool, going through the cleaning, dying and weaving process. Ending with the vision, potential and mission of the fabric to collaborate with potential external parties.
*Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition.

UM AMI

UM AMI is a original short clay-animation movie made in collaboration with fellow student Pieke Kruijff.

The inspiration for the movie
was based on personal experience.
As we started our studies in the
midst of the 2020 lockdowns, we
did not have much chance to
make for authentic friendship with
fellow students. As soon as we
got the chance, Pieke and I did choose to meet each other in real life to collaborate on our first project.
The script went form a Pinocchio remake in the dunes to a road movie about Rotterdam. Until the adorable clay character inspired a narrative unfolding in real time.
Um Ami tell the story of a lighthearted little character hoping to find connection in a fast paste digital world and was a beautiful serenade of our developing friendship during the process.

FANTASTIC ANARCHY

WARNING!
This is an unreleased original short movie exclusively visible trough this web page. please to not share.
FANTASTIC ANARCHY is a shot animation movie (16 minutes) for children's featuring a child protagonist with a great deal of Fantasy, imagination, creativity. Allowing him to literally see 'behind the boundaries of his world' (the movie screen). Yet this 'fantastic world' and its charakters do not always work in his favor. The curiosity and empathy of the boy is challenged by the strict and ruffles ruler of the orphanage and her 'spinning-bells of chores'.

The paper cutout technique.
Paper cutout is a classical, crafty and time-consuming method. JUST MY CUP OF TEA! Every limb has to be illustrated by hand for each specific scene. Cutout and attached to make it an animatable character.
-The more I can touch the material, the more love I can put in to the work-

not a standard movie

OFFICCIALLY The movie is A prototype still.
FANTASTIC ANARCY is distinct for its original way of cinematic storytelling. The concept of the movie is that the Fantasy world exists 'outside of the boundaries of the movie screen world'.

Eventually the movie will be combined with projection mapping, stage décor, life action theatre, music, and a creative workshop. Sends the theme of the movie is creative empowerment! ;)
